Statement from Chief Executive, Aodh O Donnell:

We welcome the fuel support measures for the fishing sector and the commitment from Minister Dooley to ensure that this segment was included in the support package

The implementation of this scheme will ensure a level playing field with other Member State fleets in France and Spain

We understand that this package has been created with two key aims. Firstly, it aims to offer an objective and simplified approach to the fuel costs crisis. Secondly, it seeks to ensure that the funding allocated benefits Member States in an effective, efficient and fair way.

The outcome is as a result of ongoing and proactive engagement between the Seafood Ireland Alliance and Minister Dooley, supported by the Dept of Agriculture, Fisheries and Marine team and officials.

The catching sector plays a central role in coastal communities and as a front-line provider of quality protein to domestic and overseas markets. It provides significant onshore employment depending on it for raw material. It plays a vital role in our long and short-term food security. So, in turn, it is vital that fishing is supported because of it’s value in the wider economy and community of our island.
