While there has been a lot of media publicity about EU plans to change financial supports to agriculture, there has been less comment about the same approach being taken to fishing.

The European Commission’s proposal for the EU Budget covering from 2028 to 2034 aims to consolidate various funding instruments under national and regional partnerships to support investment and reform.

Europeche, the representative body for fishermen in the European Union, has identified this approach as a “disheartening signal to the European fishing sector and the coastal communities that depend on it.
