Fishing leaders in County Donegal are urging the Government to consider support measures as fuel prices surge.

Concerns have been raised about the pressure the increasing fuel costs is having on the industry and the risk of boats being unable to function due to the cost.

Aodh O’Donnell of the Killybegs based Irish Fish Producers Organisation (IFPO) said fuel is the single largest operational cost for many vessels and the escalating fuel costs are placing severe pressure on Ireland’s fishing fleet and coastal economies, at a critical time for the sector.

“Even though, fishing is recognised as having a low-carbon footprint, fuel is essential. When prices escalate to current levels and supply is reduced, the viability of many vessels is threatened.
